German Jordanian University Innovation ecosystem

The German Jordanian University in early 2014 started the development of innovation and entrepreneurship center to support its students and staff on startups development and innovation. The proposed model was introduced in the workshop. The following presentation highlights the model.

As a first step to the implementation of the center, it is important to develop the entrepreneurship ecosystem and integrate the university center with the local ecosystem. The following program was used in the workshop to assess and engage the actors in Jordan on building the local entrepreneurship ecosystem

More than 50 local/international organizations in the innovation and entrepreneurship support participated in the workshop. The following report highlights the main findings and recommendations from the workshop.

Workshop abstract

Siemens, Toyota, IKEA, Google, Apple, TATA, P&G and Skype are some of the most successful companies in the world; nevertheless they are among the top innovative companies.  Those companies managed to reach to this stage not only through investment but also through stimulating systematically creativity and innovation in their organizations.

Thinking out of the box and creativity cannot be implemented by demanding employees to do so, because of the nature of human thinking which can be creative only under suitable environment and the right conditions.

This workshop will discuss how creativity of employees can be stimulated through policies, methods and processes.

المناسبة والظروف الملائمة والصحيحة.

National Policy & Strategy STI of Jordan

Review and assessment of the National Science, Technology and Innovation Policies and Strategies of Jordan (2013-2017)

UNESCO Project to support the Higher Council for Science and Technology of Jordan to review the national STI policies.

The project aimed to develop:

  • Strategy review and assessment framework based on international best practices
  • Review of the national Science, Technology and Innovation strategy based on the framework
  • Support the development of national innovation programs
  • Conduct stakeholders assessment workshop.

Results

  • Assessment framework developed based on World Bank, OECD and UNCTAD for STI policies
  • Public assessment workshop with stakeholders
  • Assessment report (private)

Applied Scientific Research Fund

Applied Scientific Research Fund (ASRF) is  is a non-government; non-profit organization created and has the initial funding by Samih Darwazah, founder of Hikma Pharmaceuticals to promote the development of applied science and engineering ideas.

ASRF is the first research funding organization initiated from the private sector in Jordan as non-profit company acting on commercial basis while 100% of the profit is invested back in the fund to support the creation of the innovation ecosystem in Jordan and the Middle East.

ASRF is applying and experimenting new innovation funding approaches in the Middle East while focusing on the sustainability. ASRF will fund applied researches and innovations that have market potential and the return on investment will be through intellectual property commercialization.

Jamil as Director of Operations and Consultant is responsible for

– Develop the fund strategy and framework.
– Design fund schemes to encourage Jordanian innovation by Funding mechanisms like (proof of concept, industry-research partnership and applied research).
– Develop application and evaluation process.
– Pilot the marketing, evaluation of applications, selection criteria, funding agreements and post investment support.
– Support the fund raising plans and strategic alliances/partnerships.

 

National ICT Strategy of Jordan

National ICT Strategy of Jordan is an EU funded project through FWC 2012. It was hosted by the ministry of ICT in Jordan.

Jamil as a key expert was responsible for

– Analysis of ICT sector (market, regulations, stakeholders, strategies, SWOT)
– Development of National Strategy of ICT
– Strategy benchmarking
– Development of strategic goals and vision
– Design of action and master plan for strategy implementation including KPIs

Bedaya Program

Bedaya Program (Palestine, 2012) is one of the Palestinian Information and Communications Technology Incubator (PICTI) projects funded by USAID and CISCO. The Program will tap into global resources, mentors, and market makers; to assist high potential Palestinian ICT ventures, to accelerate growth and new market outcomes.

Jamil was the program manager of Bedaya and was responsible for

– Overall coordination of Bedaya project and delivery of the KPIs (assessment, roadmaps, sales campaign support, matching with mentor,..)
– Manage team of 3 business managers and stakeholder communication
– Conduct start-up and invention opportunity assessments
– Co-develop business models and venture roadmaps with founders/inventors
– Support portfolio of ICT start-ups (screened 42 and supported 20)
– Match Bedaya ventures with training, resources and Mentors
– Organize workshops and training sessions with global trainers
– Facilitate Entrepreneur in Residence (EiR) visits to Palestine, 1on1 venture reviews, group training sessions and stakeholder briefings
– Deliver management and sales coaching for founders of Bedaya ventures
– Support the development of Bedaya Program’ Elements: start-up support, inventor support, PULL opportunities, and Seed Fund development (support for proof of market and proof of concept)
– Provide regular updates to stakeholders and Bedaya ventures
– Convert global tools/resources to local market needs (assessments, training,..)
– Identify and promote ICT business opportunities locally and globally

SRTD Program

Support to Research and Technological Development and Innovation Initiatives and Strategies in Jordan Project (SRTD) (2008-2010) is an EU funded project through ENPI.
